Questions & answers
The things people ask first
If what you need isn’t here, call us. A person answers.
- What does Cleared Homes do?
- We help homeowners get a house under control: professional organizing, whole-home and estate cleanouts, downsizing and senior transitions, and preparing a property for sale. We also coordinate the work a house needs — finding the right trade, scheduling it, and overseeing it — so you are not managing five contractors yourself.
- How much does it cost?
- It depends on the space and how much is in it — the difference between one room and a whole estate is enormous, so we do not quote over the phone. Smaller organizing work is priced by the day; larger projects are quoted as a fixed price once we have seen the property. Either way you have the number in writing before anything starts.
- What is the Home Health Check, and what does $375 cover?
- We walk your property with you, top to bottom, and hand you a written plan: what needs attention now, what to plan for this year, and what to keep an eye on. It covers eighteen categories. Twelve are the building — exterior, roof and gutters, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, appliances, interior condition, safety, deferred maintenance. Six are the things nobody checks: what is under the sink, what has built up inside the dishwasher and washing machine, the air, slow leaks, fall and reach hazards, and how old the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are. You keep the plan whether or not you hire us for anything else. It is a flat $375. It is not a licensed home inspection, and it is not an environmental or health assessment — we describe what we see and tell you what we would do about it.
- Do you do junk removal?
- We handle cleanouts and coordinate removal, but we are broader than a junk-removal company. We sort what is kept, donated, sold, discarded, or set aside for your decision — so nothing that matters gets treated as junk on the way out.
- What happens to the things we do not keep?
- Everything goes one of five ways: keep, donate, sell, discard, or review. Anything we are not certain about goes to review and waits for you. Nothing uncertain leaves the house without your say-so, and documents, photographs, valuables and keepsakes are handled deliberately rather than swept into a box.
- The house is in bad shape and I am embarrassed. Will you judge us?
- No, and you do not need to explain it to us. This is the work — thirty years of it — and there is very little we have not already seen. We help with severe-clutter situations without judgment, and the first step is simply understanding the property and what kind of help it needs.
- My parent died and I live out of state. Can you still help?
- Yes, and a great deal of our work looks exactly like this. We can work with you remotely, with photographs and updates at every stage, so you do not have to be in the room or fly in repeatedly to keep things moving.
- Can you get a house ready to sell?
- Yes. Decluttering, cleanout, packing, donation and removal, organizing what stays, and coordinating the work that has to happen before the property can be photographed, staged or listed.
- Do you do the repairs yourselves?
- No. We do not perform licensed trade work. We identify what needs attention, tell you which trade it needs, and coordinate the right person — then oversee the work rather than just handing you a phone number.
- Do you clean houses?
- Cleaning can be part of a project or something we arrange, but we are not a routine house-cleaning service. Our work is organizing, clearing and preparing a home.
- What areas do you serve?
- Our home market is Howard County, Maryland — Columbia, Ellicott City, Clarksville, Elkridge and the surrounding communities. We work up and down the East Coast, and we travel for the right project, including Naples and Southwest Florida.
- How do we get started?
- Call us or send a message and tell us what is going on at the house. The next step is a conversation, not a sales visit — we talk through the space and what it would take, and you get a written price before any work begins.
